A Trauma Survivor Thriver’s Podcast

A Conversation with Lorilee Binstock

Lorilee and I talk about my journey as a parent of a child experiencing a mental health crisis and how it has impacted our family. I also discuss the challenges of dealing with eating disorders and the importance of self-care for parents. I focus on generational trauma and the patterns that get passed down from generation to generation. I emphasize the need for parents to seek professional help and work on our own healing and understanding of our own patterns and behaviors.

A Trauma Survivor Thriver’s Podcast

Lorilee Binstock is a recovering trauma survivor but likes to call herself a Trauma Survivor Thriver. For more than 20 years she’s lived with the secret and shame of childhood sexual abuse that she thought she was going to take to her grave. This secret manifested in  severe anxiety, depression, a bipolar misdiagnosis and several suicide attempts.

After seeking treatment with the help of her husband, Lorilee finally realized she didn’t have to suffer through this trauma. Facing your demons head on is a choice. It’s a hard choice and many people don’t even know where to begin. She is here to do her best to provide resources for you. Through interviews with mental health experts and her personal story, she hopes you will join her on this journey to mental wellness.

“Secrets are toxic to one’s well-being. If you don’t take control of them, they will own you.”

Episode Highlights

I share, in part:

  • How I formed my new definition of what it means as a mom for me to “do better.”
  •  Why getting professional help if your child has an eating disorder is a must.
  • My view on how we misunderstand self-care and why it’s a necessary part of the journey.
  • The complicated nature of eating disorders and our culture’s skewed view of what they are at their core.
  • Why discomfort is a normal part of a healing journey, and how liberating it is when you see glimmers on the other side.
  • Why we’ve got to stop gaslighting ourselves about our no big deal view of childhood neglect relative to living with the symptom of trauma as an adult.
  • How and why creativity was central to my healing journey.
